Artist Stanwyck E. Cromwell on his work
"As a native of Guyana, South America, my work is culturally linked to the Caribbean through cultural similarities and practices. The mixtures of cultures and sub-cultures have been a very powerful and sometimes potent experience. The artistic imagery that I express is a testimony of my spirit. Innate, deep-seated feelings, which I have chosen to share through my artwork. The continuing direction of my work has been more of an exploration into the relationship between truth and myth, intellect and imagination, with special emphasis on symbols and colors.

The usage of the black-eye pea and other seeds are very frequent in both my drawings and paintings. The black-eye pea has dual meaning. It represents part of our national cuisine and cultural linkage to Africa, and is also symbolic of the racial make up of America. Most of the subjects that I create are drawn from the diversity of African folklores. The processes by which they combine to transform the experiences of the psyche with those of phenomenon, is totally fascinating. For this reason the ambiguities of dreams and the revelation of mythological drama has been a driving force when dealing with vision of the imagination.

Through the use of symbols, shapes and vibrant colors I have been able to project a combination of cubistic and surrealistic designs. The movement and vibrancy of my work is like an aesthetic chess game, where one move affects the other. Each color be it black or white, symbolizes feelings.

At times my work takes me on journeys of spiritual and/or imaginary mindscapes as I look within myself for vision and guidance. As a result of these experiences I have been blessed to create craft-fully metaphoric images that reveal the true essence of my spirit."
